Your Sun Valley Bookstore
Welcome to Chapter One, located in the heart of Ketchum, Idaho. Since 1970, Chapter One has been a local community bookstore entertaining travelers and local residents alike. Always with a stop in for a visit with Cheryl, the store's owner and her warm and dedicated staff, Chapter One lends itself to a cozy, chatty, comfortable spot plugged in to the heartbeat of Ketchum, Idaho.
The order of the day at Chapter One is simple. Whether customers come to Chapter One to pick up a copy of the New York Times, the local paper, a new read or simply to visit, it would not be uncommon to bump into a local, published author like Charles Brandt, Vicky Bates, Ridley Pearsonor Will Caldwell. Yes, Ketchum is that kind of town. With Chapter One as a hub of our community, customers have been known to share in delightful stories, hear about and incredible adventures and even swap titles of favorite reads with each other.
Proud of our 40 years in business, Chapter One is located in the historic home of the once great Dick Alf’s Fly Shop - at 340 Second in Ketchum, Idaho. The fly shop was once a longtime Ketchum hangout where Ernest Hemingway picked up hand-tied flies for his river trips. Word is, the place once swarmed with women, as well, hoping to pick up Ernest, or at least rub shoulders with that dashing literary giant.
These days, at Chapter One, giants still roam among us. David McCullough, Maria Shriver, Karen Armstrong, Robert Kennedy Jr., Carol Glenn and Jamie Lee Curtis-all have given book readings here. We treasure avid book talks, and carry books to suit all tastes. Downstairs, you’ll find best sellers, fiction and nonfiction, gardening, cooking, recommended staff reads, local authors, hiking and regional books, fishing, and of course, the titles of Ernest Hemingway. Upstairs, we keep children and young adult titles, classics, science fiction, spirituality, and a great selection of gently used books.
With comfortable chairs to relax in, both upstairs and down, you can work the New York Times crossword puzzle, research your next reading obsession, delve into that long-awaited third installment of your favorite trilogy, or open up a breezy beach read. We not only provide books, e-books through the KOBO APP (downloaded-able to just about any device), the KOBO e-reader device as well as cultural gifts. We are involved with countless book clubs and discussions.
Chapter One has been directly involved in founding the Sun Valley Wellness Festival and is now the official store front location for the Sun Valley Wellness Institute. We also champion local nonprofits, such as the Hunger Coalition, the Advocates, and the Animal Shelter. In our over 40 years in Ketchum, one highlight stands out: giving out 10,000 tickets for the Dalai Lama’s unforgettable 2005 visit. His spirit of generosity resides in all of the things that we love best: books, babies, dogs and a vibrant, connected community.
Staff member Cheryl Thomas , Beth Hardin, Andrew Seigal, and Anna Auseklis and so many other book lovers and story tellers. Can’t you hear their heartbeats? We do.
